常識的にひらたく言えば、ステップ(反政府デモ隊長)はバンコク都下の投票を完全には阻止し損ねるだろうし、同じく常識的には、インラックが選挙という序盤戦に勝利をおさめるだろうけれども、結果としてタイ社会は深刻で取り返しのつかない損害を被る危険を冒すことになるだろう。If common sense alone says Mr Suthep will fail to block the Bangkok votes, the same common sense tells one that Ms Yingluck will win the initial charge at the polls but risk huge, irreversible losses as a result.

It will interfere with more polls today, in the Bangkok area and additional southern precincts. The constitution requires that 95% of constituencies must complete the election fairly before parliament can meet. That won't happen today or for months to come, meaning parliament will not meet, meaning no new government can be formed, meaning Ms Yingluck and the outgoing cabinet are legally in charge, but only in caretaker status, badly crippled by laws and by the commercial sector’s caution against, oh, say, raising or borrowing money to pay rice farmers.

インラックにとっての問題は、彼女が(ステップ反政府デモ隊長より)さらに途方に暮れる思いに晒されるということです。彼女は、資金を調達することが認められていないので、署名することはできても政策のうちのどれも前進させることができない。The problem for Ms Yingluck is that she is in an even tighter box. She can still sign papers but she can't move any of her policies forward, because she is not authorized to fund them.

両方とも脱出できない迷路にはまっているので、これからは協力して出口をみつけ始めるだろうと楽天家は言うけれども(私は厭世家ではないが)見込み薄だと思う。いまだ双方ともに勝てると確信しており、勝利を確信する指揮官たるものは交渉に応じないものだから。Optimists believe that since both are caught in a maze they can't escape, they will now start to cooperate to work their way out. That seems unlikely. Both still believe they can emerge victorious, and leaders who believe they are winning will never negotiate.
