Nara Prefecture is known as the place associated with Japanese sake and the birthplace of sake. Kasuga Taisha Shrine is home to Japan's oldest sake hall, which is an important cultural property, and the Heijo Palace ruins have been restored to the well of the sake brewer, which was established under the Ritsuryo system in the Asuka period. During the medieval period, when sake was produced as a national policy, Shorakuji Temple established the technology that would become the basis of modern sake brewing.
